The rail industry is heading towards a new era of efficient asset and infrastructure management. Winners of Innovate UK’s ‘Collaborative AI Solutions to Improve Productivity in Key Sectors’ competition, North East based SME Transmission Dynamics are set to address the pressing need of the global rail sector to monitor and resolve infrastructure issues more efficiently.
Rail Anomaly Detection and Reaction
Working in collaboration with fellow North East based SME Komodo Digital, and key rail sector stakeholders Network Rail, Angel Trains, and Avanti West Coast, the project team aims to deliver a game changing solution to the industry. Building upon their successful collaboration on the market-leading pantograph and overhead line monitoring system, PANDAS-V®, the RADAR project, co-funded by Innovate UK, will address the global rail sectors critical need to efficiently monitor and resolve asset and infrastructure anomalies via data driven decision making and automation of administrative tasks.
RADAR will deliver self-learning, automated pantograph and overhead line anomaly detection capabilities and demonstrate the ability to automate reactive measures to critical incidents. These rail market leading capabilities will be delivered through extensive Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Generative Prescription Transformers, to enhance onboard edge processing protocols via Transmission Dynamics’ existing, multi-award-winning pantograph and overhead line monitoring solution, PANDAS-V®.
The RADAR project is set to deliver game-changing, disruptive innovations that are train, pantograph, and location agnostic. This truly globally advanced Industrial Internet of Things solution will improve efficiency and productivity in asset and infrastructure anomaly detection and reaction. Commenting on the project, Jarek Rosinski, Founder and CEO at Transmission Dynamics, expressed excitement about RADAR’s potential to transform the rail industry. “The RADAR project represents a significant leap forward in rail infrastructure monitoring and is a natural progression to our range of rail sector offerings. The system will utilise live railway asset and infrastructure intelligence in real-time to instantly mitigate risks, disruptions, and costs associated with the prolific anomalies that would otherwise deteriorate exponentially over time. With up to 50 trains per hour passing every anomaly and exacerbating them with each passage, RADAR’s intelligent and self-configuring pantograph network interaction (patent pending) will significantly impact railway safety, the likelihood of faults leading to further damage, risks of service affecting failures, and potential costly and disruptive de-wirements.
Moreover, beyond its monitoring and automated reporting capabilities, the RADAR project will develop and deliver an AI-driven Graphical User Interface (GUI) to improve user adoption. This user-centric interface will adapt to individual user requirements, engineering knowledge levels, and roles within the rail supply chain, delivering the exact information required, in an understandable form for the individual. By dynamically evolving to meet individual user needs, the complex GUI will enhance overall user experience and engagement, maximising the speed of reaction to alerts.
