The Importance of Building Vibration Monitoring

Building vibration monitoring is crucial for detecting potential structural issues caused by various sources such as heavy machinery operation, blasting, piling, or demolition. By monitoring signal amplitudes and setting adjustable vibration thresholds, our system helps structural damage prevention and ensures the safety of the building’s occupants.

The Building Vibration Monitoring System (BVMS) can prevent structural damage by providing early warnings and safety interlocking mechanisms to mitigate excessive building vibrations.

Key Features of the Building Vibration Monitoring System:

Safety Interlocking

Prevents excessive building vibrations by interlocking heavy industrial machinery.

EARLY WARNING SYSTEM

Strategically distributed strain gauges provide early indication of critical structural load carrying members.

REDUNDANT DESIGN

Improved reliability with duplication of analogue circuitry and digital sampling.

Remote Monitoring

Full remote monitoring capabilities for immediate notification of key stakeholders by SMS and/or email.

Customisable Alarm Settings

Allow users to adjust the sensitivity of the system to meet specific needs, ensuring timely detection and response to building vibrations

Real-time Data Analysis

Continuous real-time data analysis for prompt response to building vibrations.

Integrated Data Logging

How it works

The Transmission Dynamics BVMS is an advanced safety interlocking device designed to ensure structural integrity and safety in various scenarios. Capable of accepting input from accelerometers, strain gauges, or load cells, this system monitors signal amplitudes at critical locations on building structures, detecting vibrations caused by heavy-duty test systems, blasting, piling, or demolition operations.

When a designated vibration or stress threshold is exceeded (adjustable as needed), the BVMS triggers an alarm and activates internal dry contact relays. This prompts the urgent shutdown of machinery causing building vibrations, preventing potential structural damage or safety hazards. Additionally, in cases of overloaded roofs due to heavy snowfall, the BVMS can generate an alarm to initiate building evacuation procedures.

By comparing results from both analogue and digital sections, the BVMS ensures enhanced reliability through increased redundancy. Its digital electronics enable the buffering and storage of the last 25 seconds of time-domain traces onto an SD card (12.5 seconds pre-trigger and 12.5 seconds post-trigger). This feature allows critical information related to the cause of the alarm to be extracted and signals interrogated, facilitating effective troubleshooting and maintenance.

Early Warning System

The BVMS utilises strategically distributed accelerometers to detect high vibration amplitudes of critical structural load carrying members. By continuously monitoring signal amplitudes, the system can provide early indications of resonant conditions which can be caused by various sources such as heavy machinery operation, blasting, piling, or demolition.

Safety Interlocking

In addition to providing early warnings, the BVMS features safety interlocking mechanisms that can interlock heavy industrial machinery to avoid excessive building vibrations. When the alarm is triggered, the system prompts the shutdown of machinery causing the vibrations, preventing further stress on the building structure.

Adjustable Alarm Settings

The system allows for adjustable alarm settings based on predetermined thresholds. When the designated vibration or stress threshold is exceeded, an alarm is triggered, alerting operators to take necessary action to prevent further damage.

Real-time Data Analysis

The BVMS continuously analyses real-time data from accelerometers, strain gauges, or load cells to assess the structural integrity of the building. This allows for prompt response to building vibrations and potential structural issues, preventing damage before it occurs.

By integrating early warning systems, adjustable alarm settings, safety interlocking mechanisms, and real-time data analysis, the BVMS ensures Structural Damage Prevention by promptly detecting and mitigating excessive building vibrations.
