The ultra-miniature strain gauge amplifier AMP-UM10KB has been developed based on modern chip technology to meet the growing need for industrial strain measurements in demanding environments, where where a miniature strain gauge signal conditioner and easy set-up are essential.
Operation of the Strain Gauge Amplifier
The design concept is based upon the ability to place complete strain gauge conditioning (stable 5-V bridge excitation and precision instrumentation amplifier circuitry) in close proximity to the strain gauges. An amplified (high level) output signal which has good immunity to noise can be safely transmitter via slip rings or long cables, which considerably reduces noise and increases signal integrity.
AMP-UM10KB is a fixed gain device with nominal gain of 1000. Other fixed gain values are available on request. The standard unit is designed to service full-bridge gauges; units with internal completion resistors are available on request, for servicing half-bridge or quarter-bridge gauges.

Auto Calibration Feature
Upon startup, the amplifier automatically initiates a calibration process by connecting a precision 249 kΩ shunt resistor to one limb of the Wheatstone bridge for 5 seconds. This strain gauge signal conditioner boasts accurate readings and consistent performance over time.
LOW CURRENT CONSUMPTION
With a current consumption of less than 4 mA, the strain gauge amplifier operates efficiently, minimising power requirements. The required current capacity varies based on the strain gauge resistance, with 46 mA for 120Ω strain gauges and 18 mA for 350Ω strain gauges.
Visual Power Indicator
The AMP-UM10KB is equipped with a white LED positioned on top of the amplifier, serving as a visual indicator of the unit's power status. When the correct power supply conditions are met, the LED illuminates. This feature is particularly beneficial in remote installations, allowing for quick visual inspection to identify any power supply issues.
Input Pin Protection
Both input pins, IN+ and IN–, are internally safeguarded against voltage transients of up to ±40 V. This protection is achieved using an internal current limiting device, which eliminates the need for a series resistor that could introduce input noise. Additionally, the inputs remain protected even if the power supply is disconnected or turned off.
Output Short Circuit Protection
The device is designed to withstand continuous output short circuits to ground, providing an added layer of protection against potential damage. This feature enhances the durability and longevity of the AMP-UM10KB in demanding industrial environments.

Balancing
The AMP-UM10KB features a 25-turn on-board balancing potentiometer, enabling zeroing of the output for zero load conditions or pre-setting of the required reference voltage. For specialised applications where adjustment of the bridge out-of-balance is unnecessary, the unit is also available without balancing or calibration capabilities.

Screened against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and encapsulated for enhanced durability, the AMP-UM10KB guarantees reliable operation even in harsh conditions, withstanding forces of up to 3000g. Its compatibility with standard 0.1” pin spacing facilitates seamless integration into existing systems, while internal protection mechanisms safeguard against voltage transients and output short circuits.
